Message It's login "guest" and any password; even a blank seems to work for me.

What he said. However, I vaguely recall that when they changed the
policy, they also added a readonly login. Try guest/guest; if that
doesn't work, try various combinations of anonymous and guest for the
login and password. (And let us know if one works; we should update
the documentation to include it.)

Not our choice. At some point tigris.org started enforcing this on their
SVN repository.
